Mo, Aug. 18, 6 pm:
Reception at the City Hall,
followed by a guided city tour.
We, Aug. 20: Right after the morning sessions, we will leave by bus to Cuxhaven for
an afternoon trip to the Wadden Sea with a walk at low-tide and
get-together at half-distance to the island Neuwerk, followed by a dinner
in an old renovated nordic farmhouse close to Cuxhaven.
The banquet speeker will be Shu Lin with a talk titled
“Low-Density Parity-Check Codes: A Long Way to Glory.”
The walk will be either bare-footed or you might bring old sneakers
and thick cotton socks that you are prepared to throw away afterwards.
The latest information actually says that there is a small area which is
not comfortable when you walk bare-footed (stony) when coming from
“Sahlenburg”, which is the shortest possibility of getting there.
Rubber boots are mostly not suitable unless you have very special
rubber shoes/socks designed for these kind of trips!
If it’ll be sunny, note that, although it might not be too hot, the sunlight
in the Wadden Sea can be strong and you might want to use some
sun milk and possibly some cap. It is advised to wear shorts, possibly
have a second set of clothing in the bus and also a towel with you.
You will walk in the mud and hence will have to wash your feet after
the trip and, yes, you might get wet. There are little rivers to be crossed.
If you cannot walk for so long, please let us know well in advance so
that we can organize a horse cart.
Unfortunately, we do not have enough time to go all the way to the island.
If you have more time before or after the conference and would like to
go for a longer walk, it takes around 3h from Cuxhaven-Sahlenburg,
3.5 h from Cuxhaven-Duhnen (not stony) but it is recommended to take
a ship during the hight-tide phase for one direction. You might not manage
walking back and forth during a low-tide phase and note, people also
got killed when they underestimated the speed of the returning water.
Ask the Cuxhaven tourist office (or the organizers) to determine the right
timing.
If the weather will not permit to go for the walk in the Wadden Sea,
we will instead stop in Bremerhaven to visit the Climate House.
